About the Offering

Mondays from 5pm-6pm (Eastern) on August 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th.

In this 4-week workshop we will learn different gel printing techniques such as layering and photo transfers to create paper covers to make a writing journal. We will then learn two binding techniques to complete the journals. We will have a mindful journal practice with prompts, and finally learn how to start an effective gratitude practice as part of a self-care routine. We will be working on making two journals, one to keep and one to share.

Materials:

For making the journal cover:
– gel printing plate
– mixed media paper
– regular copy paper (multiples)
– acrylic paint
– texture materials (tissue paper, bubble wrap, leaves, yarn, stencils, etc)
– for the 4 week class add:
– laser printed photos or glossy magazine pages

For binding the journal:
– stapler (preferably one with a swivel head)
– OR needle, awl & thread

About the Instructor/Moderator

Valerie Acosta-Gonzalez is a Puerto Rican, multi-disciplinary artist based in Virginia. Her preferred mediums include paint, pottery, photography and poetry. Her art has been exhibited at the Arches Gallery in the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virginia and the Capital One Center in Tyson’s Corner, Virginia. She is a visual arts facilitator and advocate with Mission Belonging (Veteran Charity Organization) and the Veterans and the Arts Initiative at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, Virginia. She is a retired US Air Force Veteran and DoD-certified Master Resilience Trainer who loves to teach resiliency skills that can support mental health and replace misery with happiness.

 

Accessibility Information

Their work is regularly exhibited internationally and is in the permanent collections of over 60 museums. Over the past fifteen years, they have built a sustainable career as a visual artist and have extensive experience working with museums, galleries, universities and nonprofit organizations, publishers, and press outlets. In addition to their own creative work, they are passionate about sharing the professional knowledge they’ve acquired throughout their career with other artists.
