About the Offering
LIVE via ZOOM: 7pm-9pm
This poetry workshop will consist of reading and writing elegies. How does poetry equip us to talk to and about grief? How does the grieving process itself resemble the process of writing a poem? Through assigned readings, generative exercises, and craft lectures, the course will take on such issues as the myths surrounding grief, the realities of grief, delayed or disenfranchised grief, and transforming loss into literature.

About the Instructor/Moderator
Allison Joseph is the author of several poetry collections, including Confessions of a Barefaced Woman (Red Hen Press, 2018); Worldly Pleasures (Word Press, 2004); and What Keeps Us Here (Ampersand, 1992), winner of the John C. Zacharis First Book Award.
Joseph has received fellowships and awards from the Illinois Arts Council. She teaches at and directs the Southern Illinois University–Carbondale MFA Program in Creative Writing, where she also serves as the editor-in-chief and poetry editor of Crab Orchard Review. She lives in Carbondale, Illinois.

Their work is regularly exhibited internationally and is in the permanent collections of over 60 museums. Over the past fifteen years, they have built a sustainable career as a visual artist and have extensive experience working with museums, galleries, universities and nonprofit organizations, publishers, and press outlets. In addition to their own creative work, they are passionate about sharing the professional knowledge they’ve acquired throughout their career with other artists.
