About the Offering
LIVE via ZOOM: 12pm-2pm (Eastern)
In this workshop we will explore and practice elements of story-telling in comics, with a focus on autobiography and fiction. We will create original work through writing exercises and guided cartooning assignments and discuss work in a supportive atmosphere to highlight each artist’s strengths. Students will learn the techniques, tools, and theory behind successful graphic narrative. Students will learn essential organizational techniques for the creation of short and long-form comics and be peppered with professional practices tips along the way. This class is appropriate for both beginners and more advanced cartoonists.

About the Instructor/Moderator
Nicole J. Georges
is a writer, illustrator, podcaster, and professor from Portland and LA. She is the author of the award-winning graphic memoirs Calling Dr. Laura and Fetch: How a Bad Dog Brought Me Home. Her work explores themes including identity, family secrets, queer community, animals, self-help, and the inner workings of a queer, punk feminist from a Syrian-American home. Georges teaches at California College for the Art’s MFA in Comics Program. She is the host of the queer art, advice, and vegan food podcast, Sagittarian Matters, and the Murrow award-winning podcast, Relative Fiction.

Their work is regularly exhibited internationally and is in the permanent collections of over 60 museums. Over the past fifteen years, they have built a sustainable career as a visual artist and have extensive experience working with museums, galleries, universities and nonprofit organizations, publishers, and press outlets. In addition to their own creative work, they are passionate about sharing the professional knowledge they’ve acquired throughout their career with other artists.
