ASYNCHRONOUS

This course is designed for fiction writers with a foundational grasp of plot and structure. Crafting well-designed plots that do not feel contrived or lack in story tension and complexity is an essential component of the most timeless and memorable stories. In this four-week asynchronous fiction workshop, we will explore advanced techniques behind strong, well-paced and intricate plot structures. We will discuss why the most dramatically engaging stories are those rooted in character and conflict, and learn how taking a layered approach to story building can help better create intricately woven storylines and subplots that add complication, tension and complexity to a narrative. Through readings, exercises, and the sharing of one another’s work, you will learn practical techniques in crafting better plot outlines, subplots, and revision strategies that can be directly applied to your own fiction. Readings and discussions will also include excerpts from authors like Anthony Doerr, Lauren Groff, Rachel Barenbaum, Lolá Ákínmádé Åkerström, and Colson Whitehead.

Please note that this is a rigorous workshop with assignments or exercises due each day. Participants will be expected to generate work while also devoting time to giving feedback to their peers.
