2023 Summer Workshops
This workshop is part of the POETRY FESTIVAL
Paper, sticks, a printed image, a bit of wind — that’s enough to get this class off the ground. Paper kites are in all cultures and have a way of returning us to childhood as quick as a madeleine. This class won’t expect you to get barefoot and isn’t for children. Instead it will channel that childhood wonder as we use simple woodblock printing techniques and a bit of glue to create kites that soar with beauty and color. First step is to design the shape of the kite out of wood sticks and glue. Next, figure out the paper shapes needed to “skin” the kite. Lastly, design, carve and print relief blocks. We will use oil-based block printing techniques, and your choice of wood or linoleum to print on light washi papers. Once printed, the papers will be shaped and attached to the kite’s wood structure, and with some string and a bit of luck, you can fly it out the door. Or, you can take the idea of “kite” and make a soaring work of art that moves our hearts and blows open our imagination.
Biography
Daniel Heyman is a recipient of Guggenheim and Pew Fellowships, and numerous research grants. He has had residencies at Dartmouth College; MacDowell; Yaddo; and in Japan and Israel. Heyman’s work is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Library of Congress, and many other prominent public collections. Heyman lives and works in Rhode Island, and is currently Department Head of Printmaking at RISD. His most recent solo exhibition, “Summons: Daniel Heyman” was seen at Cade Tompkins Projects in Providence, RI.
