2023 Summer Workshops

This course is for students who are already at work on a longer project—be that a short story collection, a novel, or some poetic hybrid of genres—and are looking for critical feedback. The workshop is intensive; we will look at two student pieces per class (short stories or excerpts from the longer work) plus outside reading from masters. Please be prepared to read and annotate the manuscripts of your peers, and eager to share your insights. In return, I promise a thoughtful, lively class.
By July 31, please submit 10-20 pages of fiction (excerpt from a novel or story collection) which you’d like us to discuss, to firstname.lastname@example.org. Also, bring ten copies to the first class. Plus, and this is important, I’d like you to bring to that first class a poem (published, not your own) which could serve as epigraph to the book you are writing.
Justin Torres has published short fiction in The New Yorker, Harper's, Granta, Tin House, The Washington Post, and other publications. A graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, Torres’s novel We the Animals has been translated into fifteen languages and was recently adapted into a film. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for five Independent Spirit Awards.
