Joanne Dugan Writing Pictures: Embracing Uncertainty through Text & Photography Multi-Genre June 8 to July 3, 2020 Tuition: $500 Class Size: 15 Session: summer Level: 4 week asynchronous workshop

It’s been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Yet the addition of photographs to text yields surprising juxtapositions that can greatly deepen the impact of poetry, narrative and other written forms. Or, as Theodor Geisel said, “Words and pictures are yin and yang. Married, they produce a progeny more interesting than either parent.” This highly experimental workshop will encourage and inspire you to combine text and photographs to tell stories of this uncertain, yet deeply powerful time in a new way. You will use guided weekly, intuitive “sketch” assignments to write words about photographs and make photographs about words using your own original work as prompts, as well as responding to the work of others. We will also review the practices of master artists and authors who have successfully combined the word and the photograph into books, conceptual projects and digital formats. You will leave with a broad understanding of the image/text form and how it can enhance an ongoing creative practice, while channeling the paradigm-shifting power of today’s uncertainty to explore and enhance your authentic voice. **No previous photography experience is necessary (though feedback is tailored for all levels from beginner to advanced). Assignments can be done with an iPhone, Android device, or the camera of your choice. **

LIVE ELEMENTS: The instructor will hold optional individual Zoom meetings with students during the third week of class. There will also be an optional informal class gathering on the last day of the workshop.
